World Diabetes Awareness Month, November 2024
AMERICAN EYE CENTER VIETNAM

November is recognized globally as World Diabetes Awareness Month, aiming to raise awareness about diabetes and its associated complications.

One of the serious complications of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to vision impairment and even blindness if not detected and treated promptly.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition where prolonged high blood sugar levels cause damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. Over time, these vessels can become blocked or leak, affecting vision. It is a leading cause of blindness among adults.

Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy:

  • Blurred or distorted vision.
  • Difficulty seeing at night.
  • Presence of dark spots or floaters in the field of vision.

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult an eye specialist immediately.

Prevention and Treatment

  • Blood Sugar Control: Maintaining stable blood sugar levels helps reduce the risk of retinal damage.
  • Regular Eye Exams: Diabetic patients should have their eyes checked at least once a year to detect early signs of abnormalities.
  • Timely Treatment: Depending on the severity, treatments such as laser therapy, intraocular injections, or surgery may be recommeded.
