CORONAVIRUS AND THE EYE

In addition to the nose and mouth, the conjunctiva (white surface) of the eye can be an entry point for the coronavirus into the body. The virus can cause acute conjunctivitis (inflammation of the surface of the eye, or “red eye”) in some patients with COVID-19 disease.

To protect yourself:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before using eye drops or contact lenses

  • Wear glasses to protect your eyes from the environment and decrease habitual touching

  • Also... Be careful not to get liquid hand sanitizer into the eye which can cause a chemical burn! If it happens, wash your eyes immediately with at least 500 ml of clean bottled water and then see an eye doctor.
