The risk of myopia may be due to genetic factors, but it can also be due to habits and lifestyle. Nowadays, the prevalence of myopia is increasing, and it is becoming more common at a chirldren. If left uncontrolled and untreated, myopia can worsen over time as the child grows.
Here are some common signs in children with myopia:
- Looking closely while reading or playing: Children with myopia tend to squint or get closer to objects in order to see them more clearly. If you notice this behavior in your child, it may be a sign of myopia.
- Squinting: Children may have a habit of squinting, grimacing, or staring when trying to focus on objects. This helps them see better in cases where their eyes do not respond well to light.
- Eye rubbing: Children often rub their eyes when trying to concentrate and see more clearly. Eye rubbing can also be a result of eye strain from use of digital devices long time. It's important to limit your child's screen time to help relax their eyes. If your child continues to frequently rub their eyes, it's best to have their vision checked.
Myopia can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, failing to control and properly care for the eyes can lead to worsening myopia and deteriorating vision. Regular eye examinations help to detect visual problems such as myopia, astigmatism, or other impairments. So, don't forget to schedule regular eye check-ups for your child!
