FIRST AID FOR SCRATCHED EYES

If your eye is scratched, here are some things you should and shouldn't do:

1. SHOULD wash eyes with saline solution or clean water. If you don't have a dedicated eye cup, use a small, clean one. Place the rim of the cup over the bone of your eye socket, below your lower eyelid. A solution of water or saline can push the object out of your eye.

2. SHOULD wink. Blinking can help get rid of tiny dust or sand particles in your eyes.

3. DO pull the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid. Eyelashes from your lower eyelid can sweep away any foreign matter trapped under your upper eyelid.

4. SHOULD be worn sunglasses. Sunglasses will make you more comfortable while you heal.

5. DO NOT rub your eyes. Rubbing the eye can make scratches worse.

6. DO NOT touch your eyes with anything. Fingers, cotton swabs, and other objects will not help remove the foreign body, and may further injure the eye.

7. DO NOT wear contact lenses.

8. DO NOT use eye drops that reduce redness.
