Glaucoma is called the "silent blinding disease" since about 50% of people affected do not know they have it.
Glaucoma causes permanent vision loss due to abnormally high eye pressure that damages the optic nerve in the back of the eye.
This is the most common form of glaucoma, seen with increasing age or heredity. This condition may affect one or both eyes. During initial stages, there may not be any symptom, pain or change in vision. Without treatment, the condition causes gradual loss of peripheral vision, leading to "tunnel" vision. During late stages, central vision will be lost, leading to irreversible blindness.
This form of glaucoma can lead to sudden increased eye pressure, severe eye pain and rapid loss of vision. It is caused by structural crowding inside the eye and blockage of the fluid drainage structures. If not treated immediately, this condition can cause severe and permanent loss of vision.
This form of glaucoma is rare and diagnosed at birth. The baby's eye may appear very large, cloudy, light sensitive and with excessive tearing. If your child has these symptoms, he/she needs to be examined by an ophthalmologist.
This form of glaucoma is due to other conditions, such as eye inflammation, side effect of taking steroid medication, eye tumor, following eye surgery, or after eye injury.
