GLAUCOMA

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is called the "silent blinding disease" since about 50% of people affected do not know they have it.

Glaucoma causes permanent vision loss due to abnormally high eye pressure that damages the optic nerve in the back of the eye.

Types of Glaucoma

OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA

This is the most common form of glaucoma, seen with increasing age or heredity. This condition may affect one or both eyes. During initial stages, there may not be any symptom, pain or change in vision. Without treatment, the condition causes gradual loss of peripheral vision, leading to "tunnel" vision. During late stages, central vision will be lost, leading to irreversible blindness.

NARROW OR CLOSED-ANGLE GLAUCOMA

This form of glaucoma can lead to sudden increased eye pressure, severe eye pain and rapid loss of vision. It is caused by structural crowding inside the eye and blockage of the fluid drainage structures. If not treated immediately, this condition can cause severe and permanent loss of vision.

CONGENITAL GLAUCOMA

This form of glaucoma is rare and diagnosed at birth. The baby's eye may appear very large, cloudy, light sensitive and with excessive tearing. If your child has these symptoms, he/she needs to be examined by an ophthalmologist.

SECONDARY GLAUCOMA

This form of glaucoma is due to other conditions, such as eye inflammation, side effect of taking steroid medication, eye tumor, following eye surgery, or after eye injury.

Risk Factors

  • Age > 40
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Myopia > 4D; Hyperopia; Early Presbyopia, with rapidly increasing prescription
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

Prevention and Treatment

  • Open-angle glaucoma: A comprehensive eye exam and screening tests for glaucoma can lead to early diagnosis of this condition. Glaucoma can be treated effectively with eye drop medications, laser, and surgery to control the progression of the condition and prevent significant vision loss.
  • Narrow or closed-angle glaucoma: A comprehensive eye exam can lead to early diagnosis of this condition. Laser iridotomy procedure or cataract surgery can effectively prevent sudden increased eye pressure and vision loss.
