You often know that cataract is a dangerous disease and can lead to blindness. But do you really understand all about the disease? Learn important facts about cataracts with the American Eye Center that you may not have known!!!
In the elderly, the most common type of cataract forms mainly in the center of your eye’s lens, called a nuclear cataract. Another type of cataract is called a cortical cataract and posterior subcapsular cataract. Posterior subcapsular cataracts usually develop faster than nuclear and cortical cataracts.
When a baby is born with a cataract or develops it during early childhood, it is called a congenital cataract. It can be due to genetics, general medical conditions, infection or trauma before birth.
The eye’s lens is nourished by the aqueous humor, the clear fluid in the front of the eye between the lens and the cornea. Aqueous humor provides oxygen and glucose (sugar) for cells. When someone with diabetes has uncontrolled blood glucose levels, cells in the lens can become cloudy and less transparent, causing cataracts.
