Presbyopia is a natural age-related condition that affects the ability of the eyes to focus on near objects. Presbyopia usually becomes noticeable in your early to mid-40s and continues to worsen until around age 65.
Presbyopia is caused by a hardening of the lens of your eye, which occurs with aging. As your lens becomes less flexible, it can no longer change shape to focus on close-up images. As a result, these images appear out of focus.
- Difficulty seeing small print or objects up close
- Eye strain or fatigue when reading or doing close work
- Headaches or blurred vision when doing close work for extended periods
- Other symptoms may include difficulty seeing in dim light or experiencing double vision.
Presbyopia is typically diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam, which may include a visual acuity test, refraction test, and examination of the lens and retina. It is important to see an eye doctor if you are experiencing any changes in your vision, including difficulty seeing objects up close, as this could be a sign of presbyopia or another eye condition.
