At any age, when a cataract occurs, the eye's vision will be blocked. It will prevent light from reaching the retina and cause light rays to scatter. This distorts the image and can cause blurry vision and glare.
Children's vision and brains are still developing until they're 9 or 10 years old. That's why untreated cataracts can have serious, permanent effects on their vision.
- Congenital
- Genetics
- Eye injury
- Metabolic disorders like diabetes during pregnancy
- Many times the cause of cataracts in a child is not known
Cataracts can happen in one or both eyes. It appears in different parts of the lens and range in size from tiny dots to dense clouds.
For most children, surgery is just the first step to fix the eyes. Ongoing treatment must help repair eye and brain connections. This involves having the proper refractive correction to focus clear images on the retina.
After surgery, children often need some combination of:
- Contact lenses
- Lens implants
- Glasses
If the child has lazy eye, he or she may need patching. You cover the stronger eye to stimulate vision in the weaker eye.
Children who receive timely treatment, follow-up have a better prognosis and minimize complications. Children may need years of vision rehabilitation to have a successful outcome. So, finding and treating cataracts early is very important.
