CONTACT LENSES
Contact lenses are thin, clear, disks of plastic that float on the tear film coating the cornea, the clear front window of the eye. Contact lenses have prescribed strengths that can correct the same conditions that eyeglasses correct:
- myopia (nearsightedness)
- hyperopia (farsightedness)
- astigmatism
- presbyopia
Specialty Contact Lenses available at American Eye Center:
- Toric contact lenses-- correct astigmatism
- Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses-- correct high astigmatism, irregular corneas and conditions such as keratoconus
- OrthoK (overnight) contact lenses-- safe overnight vision correction for clear vision without glasses all day
- Colored (cosmetic) contact lenses-- change the color of the eyes. Cautions and care regimens apply to colored contact lenses as to other lenses.
- Semi-scleral, scleral, hybrid lenses-- for highly irregular corneas, after injury or after corneal surgeries
